Walk down a 200-year-old stone-walled corridor, open a circa 1900 stained glass and mahogany paneled door, and enter our newest addition. The Porch Room’s four-poster queen bed is canopied in part by an old cedar shake roof, the remains of our home’s original eave line. The bed shelters beneath an airy, vaulted barn beam ceiling, surrounded by four windows that frame our sprawling fields and pond.
On warm evenings, open the windows to enjoy the soothing sounds of our nearby pond fountain. Wake up to plentiful morning light streaming in across the quilted coverlet, illuminating the antique dresser and random-width hickory floor. Whitewashed plaster walls are adorned with lighthearted artifacts and whimsical nature scenes.
Warmth abounds in the Porch Room. Carriage lantern light fixtures, louvered pine window shutters, a cushioned rattan rocker and an oversized wicker Casablanca fan complement this porch-like setting, ever so slightly reminiscent of a sun-drenched portico in Colonial India.
An old oxidized copper gutter and downspout are attached to the interior roof eave. Water is pumped, allowing it to trickle through the gutter and downspout into a bamboo plant inhabited antique copper basin. The simulation of rain trickling further lends itself to the ambience and tranquility of sitting on a porch during a warm Spring shower.
The open-air feeling continues into the private bath, with its vaulted ceiling, skylight and stone floor. Featured is a custom-made flame maple vanity, crafted by a New England furniture maker.
